The total price of a nice treadmill runs from $1000 to $3500.  There are some ultra low priced models around $600 by these have lots of limitations. Elliptical trainers range from $200 to $5000. Stationary bikes range anywhere from $150 and $1500 at the high end. The old adage, “you get what you pay for” definitely still applies here so make sure that you strike a balance between affordability with usability and features.

Note: Just because you can pay installments on a $1000 elliptical trainer or a $3000 treadmill does not mean that you can afford it. You don’t want excess debt as a stressful reason to overeat and wipe out your workout gains. Determine exactly how much you can realistically afford to spend on the fitness machine.

Figure out the Complete Price Out The Door

Shipping, transportation, installation and other extra charges can add up easily. Before settling on a machine, make sure that you take note of all these charges so that you won’t blow your budget at the last minute.

Decide on the Location

Besides your goals and budget, the two other equally important things to remember when buying workout machines are to remember to test the equipment and measure the size of the equipment and the area that you are placing the equipment in. While the former is a bit automatic, the latter is often overlooked, because when you are at the store, it is hard to decide if the machine will really fit into your available location. Consider the space needed for the equipment.

If you have an entire room available to convert to a home gym, it makes sense to buy a separate piece of full body cardio equipment and a separate machine for total body resistance training. If your entire gym encompasses a small corner of your living room, then you must determine which workout goal is more important to you.

Keep Your Options Open When Shopping

A wise shopper does not settle on just one store. Compare prices of the same equipment at at least two stores. It also pays to do online ahead of time so that you are armed with the correct information about the particular machine you are looking at. Study product reviews whenever they are available, just doing a google search for ‘elliptical reviews’ yields a ton of information.

Do Not Be Deceived

Salespeople will do anything to make a sale. If you see TV ads promising that you can drop 10 pounds, lose several inches off your waist and be a whole new you in only two minutes a day, don’t fall for it. Yes, these claims are definitely too good to be true. Quick-fix products with “before” and “after” testimonials may be attractive but remember this: bodies do not change drastically after small a number of sessions.
